2017 International Women’s Day

2017 International Women’s Day

On March 8, the world will celebrate International Women’s Day, a day to mark the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also calls for actions to be taken to address the unresolved issue of gender parity.

Women are playing an ever increasing and meaningful role in our Union at all levels. The IAM is stronger when all united voices are at the bargaining table.

There are various events across the country and the IAM encourages Machinist sisters and brothers to attend local events in their respective communities. To find an event in your area, please look up International Women’s Day 2017 events, or contact your Federation of Labour.

This year, Sister Kim Valliere, District 78, Sister Cheryl English, LL 2323, Sister Gigi Najam, LL 2921, Sister Maritza Juarez, LL 1295, Sister Jennifer O’Connor, LL 1922 and Sister Donna Martin, LL 235, took part in the IWD celebration and brunch, on March 5, at the Galaxy Grand Convention Centre, in Brampton. The featuring keynote speaker was MPP Peggy Sattler.

This year’s theme is Stop the hate. Unite the fight. Build the resistance. Unity is power, to help our sisters and their children who are presently experiencing violence, abuse, and physical and emotional hardships.

The IAM encourages Machinist sisters and brothers who live in the GTA to attend the IWD rally and march organized in Toronto on March 11, at 11AM, Medical Sciences Auditorium, 1 Kings College Circle. Indoor rally begins at 11AM, the march departs at 1PM. For more info: iwdtoronto.ca, #iwdtoronto, #IWD2017.
