Winnipeg, MB – The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers have endorsed Andrew Swan for the leadership of the Manitoba New Democrats and as a result Premier of Manitoba. The leadership race became necessary with the resignation of long standing party leader Gary Doer.
Andrew has roots within the IAMAW. His father is a retired aircraft mechanic and member of I.A.M. Lodge 714 in Winnipeg. Andrew credits those roots to the values of family and community that he will bring to the position.
There are tough issues facing this government from the perspective of Labour for the remainder of this mandate and moving forward. We feel assured that Andrew will address those issues in a manner prudent to the future economic viability of jobs in Manitoba. Andrew is committed to recognizing that manufacturing jobs play an important role in the economy of Manitoba.
“We are satisfied that Andrew’s grass roots approach to the needs of workers will best meet the requirements of our members and their families” said IAMAW Grand Lodge Representative Brian Short. The Machinists spent considerable time reviewing our member’s issues with Andrew. They included different aspects of labour legislation, a comprehensive manufacturing strategy and issues that directly impact the disposable income of our members.
The IAMAW knows there is still a great deal to do for workers. We applaud Gary Doer and his government for the strides made to date and feel that Andrew is the individual that will allow us to take those entire gains one step further together. “However that cannot stop at the end of this mandate,” said Short. We have to look at a future beyond the next election and we like the chances of our party being led into that future by Andrew Swan.”
