Toronto, ON –“Thomas Mulcair has been a strong supporter of the Machinists on past issues and we’re confident we can work with him in the future,” said IAMAW Canadian General Vice President Dave Ritchie.
Ritchie made that statement moments after Thomas Mulcair won the federal NDP Leadership on the fourth ballot at the NDP leadership convention in Toronto over the weekend.
“He has been in our corner throughout the Air Canada dispute, walking our picket lines and denouncing the federal back-to-work legislation imposed by the Harper government,” Ritchie likes the fact that Mulcair has reached out to his rivals for the leadership for support in taking on the Harper Conservatives. “He can unite the party and make the NDP a force to contend with in the House of Commons. He can maintain the party’s strength in Quebec and appeal to the rest of Canada. The Machinists will lend their support to that goal.”
“We have some tough times ahead and we look forward to his support on important issues for our membership,” added Ritchie.
