Hollywood MD – It’s not often that a trade unionist is given the moniker ‘a cornerstone of his union’, but the late Paul Mitchell was that and so much more. So it was only fitting that his union sisters and brothers made his memory a cornerstone of the Feedback Inn at the Winpisinger Education Centre at Placid Harbor, Maryland. Over his 19 year affiliation with the IAM, Mitchell took part in numerous education courses at the Harbor which also included providing an education to countless sisters and brothers on how to play poker. “I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to Paul, than a handcrafted oak poker table in his name here at the Feedback Inn,” explained IAM District Lodge 78 Directing Business Representative Ralph Martin. “Lord knows he took more than a few dollars from me at a table in this corner over the years.”
Just as Paul would have wanted it, friends gathered around his table. The handcrafted 8- player table made of Pennsylvania oak with a leather inlaid center sporting the IAM logo, was made possible through donations from members of IAM District Lodge 78 and Local Lodges 103, 901, 1295, 2330, 2922, 235, 1922, 2412, 717T, 1975, 2113, 2413 and the DL 78 Retirees Club.
The table was dedicated the evening of Wednesday September 3, 2014 during a Canadian Political Action Committee symposium held at the Winpisinger Centre.
“Paul Mitchell was a brother who really got what it meant to be a trade unionist,” explained IAM Canadian General Vice President Dave Ritchie. “He was a wonderful man and this is a fantastic way to remember him, the District and the Local Lodges are to be congratulated for their efforts.”
Paul Mitchell was the IAM District Lodge 78 Directing Business Representative when he passed away in March 2013.
