London, UK – The Civil Aviation section of the International Transportation Workers Federation (ITF) has appointed IAM Canadian Airline Coordinator Carlos DaCosta, as Coordinator of its MRO Committee. The appointment was made at a recent ITF Civil Aviation conference.

“The ITF needed someone with a maintenance background and was familiar with the ITF, to coordinate their Maintenance Repair and Overhaul committee and Carlos was ideal for the position,” said IAM Canadian General Vice President Dave Ritchie. Da Costa was an aircraft technician with Air Canada for 24 years and has served as the Canadian airline coordinator for the IAM since 2006.

“We have three major issues facing our members worldwide,” explained Da Costa. “First there’s the outsourcing of MRO work to countries with non-unionized labour which is a clear case of worker exploitation. Secondly we must deal with the corporate agenda to deskill aircraft maintenance trades which lowers wages and standards around the world. Thirdly we have to deal with the impact of Safety Management Systems (SMS) on aviation workers.”

“Our first step will be for the committee to survey aviation workers worldwide for a better understanding of their concerns,” said Da Costa. “In this way we can develop a plan to combat the issues I mentioned.”
