Fort Frances, ON – Members of IAM Local Lodge 1120 have ratified their first collective agreement with Kal Tire.

The IAM organized the group in February 2017. “This is a unique situation because there is no central bricks and mortar building, rather these tire technicians go right to the job site – the New Gold Rainy River mine 65 kilometers northwest of Fort Frances – to perform their job,” explained IAM Grand Lodge Representative/Organizer Scott Jackson . “They’re vulnerable on their own out there so they came to us.”

The three-year agreement includes wage adjustments for introductory pay scales as well as wage increases in each year. “A key component in this agreement is that all medical and dental benefits will now be paid 100 per cent by the employer,” said IAM Grand Lodge Representative Tony Didoshak. “All previous benefits are now written into this agreement and we negotiated an additional holiday as well.”

The ten tire technicians perform tire repair, changing and overhaul on the heavy equipment used in the mining operation. This is the first Kal Tire organized by the IAM in Ontario. The IAM also represents workers at Kal Tire outlets in British Columbia and Alberta.
