Nanaimo, BC – Members of IAM Local Lodge 456 have a new two-year agreement with Canadian Tire. It is the only unionized auto service department at Canadian Tire.

The agreement provides wage increases of 2 per cent in each year. “For the first time, training apprentices and language for training wages is included in the new agreement,” explained IAM District Lodge 250 Business Representative Alastair Haythorthwaite. Two employees have been indentured to become Automotive Technicians.

Other agreement highlights include formalized tool insurance so that mechanics tools can be purchased for 10 per cent less than the last sale price which is a significant discount.

“Canadian Tire is a challenge to bargain with because corporate policies reduce the flexibility of local management,” said Haythornthwaite. “However in the end the parties found common ground and a deal worth accepting.

The IAM represents workers at more than 20 auto dealerships and repair facilities on Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia.
