For Immediate Release

Duncan, BC – The 27 employees at Peter Baljet Chevrolet- Buick-GMC and its associated body shop – Fix Auto Duncan are the newest members of IAM Local Lodge 456. The IAM now represents workers at ten automotive dealerships on Vancouver Island.

“The service to our members is what drew these workers to the IAM,” explained IAM District Lodge 250 Business Representative Alastair Haythornthwaite. “Already our Unionized auto dealerships were setting the standard for wages and benefits on Vancouver Island for non-Union shops but, with the replacement of local ownership by a large national auto chain, Auto Canada, workers at Peter Baljet Chev saw the need for an effective counter balance. And on Vancouver Island there is only one organization with the track record of service and representation in the auto sector to fit the bill, the Machinists Union.”

The 27 members consist of Auto Technicians, Parts Persons, Service Advisors, Body Men, Painters and Estimators. The IAM also represents workers at more than 20 auto dealerships in mainland British Columbia.
