Markham, ON – The International Association of Machinists has broken new ground in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) by organizing its first auto dealership – Markham Acura.

“These workers were looking for fairness on the job and greater security,” explained IAM District Lodge 78 Organizer Scott Jackson. “This isn’t the first time we have tried to organize an auto dealership in the GTA but the persistence of our organizing team of Roy Bhansingh and Phoenix Yuang has finally paid dividends. They gained the trust of these workers and we look forward to representing them."

The 19 newest members of IAM Local Lodge 235 consist of mechanics, parts personnel, apprentices and service advisors.

The IAM represents workers at auto dealerships in Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay, as well as numerous auto dealerships on Vancouver Island, the lower mainland of British Columbia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. The IAM also organized its first auto dealership in Montreal last month.
