Mississauga, ON – Despite a very anti-union campaign by their employer, workers at the Staybridge Inn and Suites in Mississauga decided to join the IAM!
“The workers saw through their employer’s deceptions and false promises and voted accordingly,” explained IAM District Lodge 78 Organizer Scott Jackson. “Organizers Roy Bhansingh and Phoenix Yuan did a great job reassuring the employees of the value of having the union represent them in the workplace. Jackson pointed out the value of having Jyoti Shrestha, the IAM Chief Steward at the Fairfield Inn speak to the workers. “It’s one thing to have an organizer tell you of the benefits of belonging to a union but it’s quite another when you hear it from someone who does their job and has gone through a recent organizing campaign,” said Jackson. “Her assistance was vital to this organizing win.”
The 11 new members include cooks, laundry and housekeeping personnel.
The IAM represents hospitality workers in Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, London, Oakville and Sarnia.
