Toronto, ON – Members of IAM Local Lodge 2413 have ratified a new collective agreement with Garda Access Control.
“The members told us they have never been given a signing bonus before, they’re extremely happy,” said IAM Transportation District Lodge 140 General Chairperson Talwinder Rayat. The agreement was accepted by a margin of 94 per cent.
“We moved through the negotiations at a snail’s pace and reached an impasse due to a large degree because of the minimum wage increase to $14.00 an hour in Ontario brought in January 1, 2018 along with the mandatory minimum wage increase to $15.00 in 2019, “ explained Rayat. “Because of the minimum wage increases, the employer wanted our members to pay for their own benefits as well as other concessions. We ultimately filed for conciliation to obtain a deal.”
The new agreement provides a wage increase of 1.5 per cent in the first year retroactive to February 1, 2018, and wage increases of 2 per cent in the second and third year respectively. Other agreement high lights include:
- One extra sick day
- Signing bonuses for all members as follows: $100.00 for all casual members, $200.00 for members with up to five years of service, $290 for members with five to ten years of service, $390.00 for members with eleven to fifteen years of service and $485.00 for members with fifteen or more years of service
“Our bargaining team deserves a lot of credit to delivering this agreement,” explained Rayat. “I also want to thank Brother Sam Jabbar, who took the time to sit down with our members after the tentative agreement was reached. Together we conducted face-to-face meetings with the members to explain the agreement and answer their questions.”
The 93 members provide perimeter security around Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. The IAM is the largest union at Pearson Airport.
