Oakville, ON – Fifteen employees of the Country Inn are the latest hospitality workers to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
The certification of housekeeping, maintenance and kitchen staff at the hotel marks a successful conclusion to an organizing drive begun more than a year ago. “We tried to organize this group a year ago and it ended in a tie vote,” explained IAMAW District Lodge 78 Apprentice Organizer Roy Bhansingh. “But the employer didn’t follow through on the promises he made at that time and the workers wouldn’t have their concerns ignored any longer. Wages, benefits and hours of work were the big issues.”
The workers at the Country Inn are the latest members of IAMAW Local Lodge 1295. They join other hospitality workers represented by the Machinists from hotels in Toronto, London and Sarnia.
