Toronto, ON – Women’s March activists around the globe are mobilizing on January 19th to defend the rights of women and their democracy. People will gather in cities around the world for the annual Woman’s March to demonstrate our solidarity and push for social justice for the most marginalized and oppressed among us.
“The theme for 2019 Women’s Marches around the world is ‘Ending Violence against Women’,” said Heather Kelley – IAM Grand Lodge Representative/Coordinator for Women Issue and Human Rights. “The World Health Organization (WHO), reports that 1 in 3 women worldwide has experienced either physical or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.”
Ontario women are organized and are mobilizing but we can’t stop there. “We’re coming back with an agenda to build a roadmap for 2022 and the policy changes we want to see,” said Ontario Federation of Labour Secretary Treasurer Patty Coates. “We march to stand up and fight back – for any woman who is attacked for her race, religion, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or how she looks.”
“We march because women continue to face significant inequalities in the workplace, including discriminatory pay and employment practices,” said Kelley. “We are asking our members to find a March close to them and join in on January 19th to continue to commit to advancing our Sisters rights.”
