Mirabel, Wednesday May 6th, 2026 – AirAsia’s order for 150 A220 aircraft, the largest order in the history of the program, is welcomed by the IAM Union Local 712, which represents nearly 1,500 workers at Airbus Canada in Mirabel.
At a time when many sectors of our economy are currently experiencing significant turbulence, the aerospace industry is faring particularly well.
“Amid global economic uncertainty, this announcement is excellent news. It demonstrates the confidence placed in our industry and its workers“, states Éric Rancourt, international representative of the IAM Union in Québec.
The presence of Quebec’s new Premier Christine Fréchette and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Mirabel for this announcement highlights the strategic importance of Quebec’s aerospace industry to both levels of government.
“The presence of Ms. Fréchette and Mr. Carney here today highlights the pivotal economic contribution of the aerospace industry to Quebec and Canada”, said Éric Rancourt. “In addition to showcasing us on the international stage, the aerospace industry has the power to bring new money into our economy while providing a livelihood for tens of thousands of workers. It also has the potential to play a central role in achieving the Canadian government’s national defense objectives. I believe both levels of government understand this fully,” he added.
“This order ensures good jobs for years to come and is a testament to the expertise and hard work of the Mirabel workers in ensuring the profitability and success of the A220 program,” concluded Christian Bertrand, president of Local 712.
