Toronto, ON – Dissatisfaction by members of the IAMAW over the state of negotiations with Air Canada became public Friday morning at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. Hundreds of members from IAMAW Local Lodge 2323, the largest union local at Air Canada protested outside Air Canada hangars.
The members across Canada showed their frustration earlier this week when they rejected a tentative agreement and gave their bargaining committee a strong strike mandate.
The fact that the company awards multi millions of dollars to its top executives while not caring about its front-line workers is a major problem. The membership does not like many issues about the contract. This explains the very strong rejection and strike mandate and the growing unrest as witnessed at this morning’s rally.
The Union has informed Air Canada that it is willing to resume negotiations. The company has yet to respond. The IAMAW represents more than 8500 mechanics, baggage handlers, aircraft groomers, auto mechanics, electricians, and cargo agents at 17 stations across Canada.
