Vancouver, BC – IAM District 140 filed two grievances after mass layoffs at Swissport Vancouver and has won them in a show of perseverance over two years.
The first grievance was filed at the end of 2020 when the Company paid out the members for their unused sick and personal days as per the CBA. The Company decided to pro-rate the payments based on the months of service worked in that year. This is the first time that proration had ever taken place and the Union disagreed with the Company position.
The case was heard in 2022 and ruled in the favour of the Union, resulting in the IAM members receiving payouts in late November 2022 amounting to $240,000.00.
The second grievance was filed in March, 2021 regarding payment in lieu of proper notice once our members were deemed terminated based on the Canada Labour Code.
This case was heard over several days in 2022 and again we received a positive result. This grievance has a significant monetary value of approximately $450,000.00 to our members.
“The result of these 2 grievance payouts at a time with the holidays right around the corner couldn’t come at a better time,” said Todd Haverstock, District 140 General Chairperson. “Members have been calling, emailing and texting us with their thanks. They appreciate the work the IAM has done and that we continued to fight even though most have moved on and will never return to their former jobs.”
IAM members provide ramp and cargo services for multiple airlines at the Vancouver airport.
