The IAM in Canada strongly condemns the killings in Atlanta, Georgia. The murders of eight people, was a despicable act based on cowardice and hate and clearly targeted women of East Asian origin.
The suspect, a 21-year-old white male, has been charged with four counts of murder in Atlanta, GA, as well as four counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault in nearby Cherokee County, GA.
Six of the murder victims are East Asian women, sparking fears that the killings were race-based and misogynistic in focus.
“This is absolutely tragic at any time, even more so that the murders of these women occurred in March, the month dedicated to celebrating women, their accomplishments, as well as recognizing the impossible obstacles they face,” said Stan Pickthall, IAM Canadian General Vice-President. “Make no mistake, this was targeting women, something that has happened all too often. Whether it be domestic relationships or killings in larger society, we condemn the misogyny and xenophobia that motivates people to these heinous acts.”
The IAM sends our deepest condolences to families and friends of the victims lost in this tragedy.
