Halifax, NS – This morning, IAM Local Lodge 2797 member Melissa Marsman was just elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour (NSFL). This marks the first time an IAM member has been in the position of a ranking officer of the NSFL.
Marsman, a 22-year member of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees’ Union (NSGEU), she is also an activist and advocate for unionism, fairness and workers’ rights.
“As one of the Unions representing under 1000 members at the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, I’m excited and honoured as Local Lodge 2797 member to have been elected as the new Secretary-Treasurer of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour. As a union advocate with over 20 years of experience, I will bring all of my expertise to make the most of this position,” said Marsman.
Marsman brings a variety of experience to her new position through her work in her NSGEU local, including President, Board member and 3rd Vice President of the NSGEU.
She worked for 20 years as a Senior Accounting Clerk preparing and maintaining large scale budgets. For the past 2 years she has been an IAM Local 2797 member as an accounting clerk for the NSGEU.
Marsman has also served on the NSFL’s Anti-Racism Human Rights Committee for 10 years, where she was the Recording Secretary responsible for preparing accurate minutes and other documentation. Marsman also served as the alternate to the Vice-President Representing Workers of Colour and Aboriginal People.
The NSFL represents approximately 70,000 members of affiliated unions in more than 350 locals working in every aspect of Nova Scotia’s economy.
