The 18-month agreement provides wage increases of 2 per cent for day shift personnel, 3 per cent for relief and part time personnel and lump sum payments for night shift, cooks, cleaners and maintenance personnel. Other agreement highlights include:

  • Relief and Part time personnel receive a 2.5 per cent increase in their earnings in lieu of benefits
  • Overtime pay for shift extensions
  • A 10 cent per hour increase in pension contributions
  • Introduction of eye care benefit – $200 per year including spouses

“This was the first time we had to go to conciliation with this employer, due largely in part to pay equity and alignment of classifications for equal pay for work of equal value,” explained IAM District Lodge 78 Directing Business Representative Derek Ferguson.

The 55 members are employed as Child Youth Workers, cooks and maintenance personnel at two youth detention centres in London. The King Street Detention Centre for Youth is an open detention and custody facility for male youth’s age 12-18 years that have been reprimanded by the Youth Criminal Justice System.
